Ebook About
“A stirring, beautiful memoir that is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, and ultimately a triumph” from the Wall Street Journal–bestselling author (Publishers Weekly, starred review).Carolyn Jourdan, an attorney on Capitol Hill, thought she had it made. But when her mother has a heart attack, she returns home to the Tennessee mountains, where her father is a country doctor and her mother works as his receptionist. Jourdan offers to fill in for her mother until she gets better. But days turn into weeks as she trades her suits for scrubs and finds herself following hazmat regulations for cleaning up bodily fluids; maintaining composure when confronted with a splinter the size of a steak knife; and tending to the loquacious Miss Hiawatha, whose daily doctor visits are never billed. Most important, though, she comes to understand what her caring and patient father means to her close-knit community. With great humor and great tenderness, Heart in the Right Place shows that some of our biggest heroes are the ones living right beside us.“This is a wonderful book. I would have enjoyed it even if Carolyn wasn’t a neighbor of mine in East Tennessee. She is a great writer.” —Dolly Parton“With lavish affection, genuine respect, and exuberant humor, Jourdan offers a zestfully compassionate portrait of a poor community rich in the ways of true humanity.” —Booklist“A beautiful memoir . . . Making a difference can be as simple as getting up in the morning and helping those around you.” —Family Circle

Book Heart in the Right Place: A Memoir Review :

I purchased this book for Kindle a couple years ago, but I didn't get to reading it until last week. "Heart in the Right Place" by Carolyn Jourdan details the author's experiences as she steps back from a fast-paced Washington attorney job to assist in her aging father's medical practice in rural Tennessee.Jourdan recounts a sundry array of cases that cross her path in her father's office - from the funny to the ironic to the downright heartbreaking. The emotional nature of these experiences is amplified by the fact that in this small, one doctor town, the names attached to those cases are often close friends with whom her family faces daily life. As she narrates these experiences, she also muses on her own process of letting go of the life she left in Washington and finding a place for herself in her hometown. My favorite quote from the book is as follows: "When it came down to it, all we really ever had to give each other was our attention. Wasn't that what love was? Paying selfless attention?" (p. 213).The Good: The stories Jourdan relates are varied and interesting. I would have given the book 3.5 stars if possible, because it was a pleasant read. The kindness with which the stories are told reminds me a bit of James Herriot's narratives of his experiences as a country vet. Jourdan develops her characters thoroughly and believably. She communicates emotion effectively and draws the reader in to celebrate and grieve with her. Although it's not suspenseful, it is entertaining and kept me engaged to the end.The Frustrating: Jourdan is clearly well-educated, serving as an attorney in nuclear policy in Washington. Lots of clever (though a bit pretentious) allusions and comparisons are made throughout the book. At first, I found this engaging- "Wow, I get to learn about all these things!". However, when I researched a couple of her clever comments that she passed off as fact, I could only find related rumors but no solid footing. (specifically, p. 46 "the J. Edgar Hoover Building which had been designed to be tricky and misleading by some of the most paranoid people in the world" and p. 212 "Back in the good old days...when a liege lord had an important question to ask one of his vassals, he'd take hold of the man's private parts and ask the question.") This was disappointing to me, as it made me question the research she did and the authority with which she wrote the rest of the book. It could be I picked two bad eggs to look into, but it did lower my opinion of the book.A second, though smaller frustration, is that the book ended rather abruptly. I would have liked an update on what happened next, where she's at now. Of course, it is her right to include what she wants, but she'd drawn me into her personal life and I felt I'd been left with a lot of unsatisfied questions at the end.Overall, I enjoyed the book. If you like memoir, give it a try. It's not an epic page-turner, but it's kind and thought-provoking and is a good book to curl up on the couch with for a relaxing read. On a side note, it gave me the itch to take a trip down to the mountains of Tennessee.
I can't say how much I love this book. My family is from upper East Tennessee; and although I grew up in Chattanooga, which is closer to Atlanta, as a child I spent so much time visiting this area between Knoxville and the Virginia border. The author has done the most fantastic job of creating the people of this area, their eccentricities, they wonderful hearts, and their view of the outside world. Through them, Ms. Jourdan makes you cry, makes you laugh, and makes you think about what really matters in life.Compassion and respect for others are the hallmarks of Ms. Jourdan's memoir. She leaves the compassionless legal-political world of Washington, D.C. for her father's rural medical practice where patients, even those who can't pay, are never turned away yet are never deprived of their dignity. What begins as a three-day temp job to cover for her seriously ill mother becomes a much longer opportunity for the author to reconnect with her roots and to reexamine the meaning of her own life. Her account is always honest and never sentimental; and Ms. Jourdan makes the reader feel, along with her, the strength of the competing forces in her life. Does she go back to D.C. or does she stay in Tennessee? The resolution of her dilemma is heroic and authentic. This book is funny, sad, tender, and compassionate. There are so few books that I know I will read again, but Heart in the Right Place is at the head of my list. You will love every minute you spend with this book.
