Ebook About What type of leadership is needed in a moment that demands adaptive change? Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains, is uniquely positioned to explore the qualities of adaptive leadership in contexts ranging from churches to nonprofit organizations. He deftly examines both the external challenges we face and the internal resistance that holds us back.Bolsinger writes: "To temper describes the process of heating, holding, hammering, cooling, and reheating that adds stress to raw iron until it becomes a glistening knife blade or chisel tip." When reflection and relationships are combined into a life of deliberate practice, leaders become both stronger and more flexible. As a result, these resilient leaders are able to offer greater wisdom and skill to the organizations they serve. Also available: Tempered Resilience Study GuideBook Tempered Resilience: How Leaders Are Formed in the Crucible of Change (Tempered Resilience Set) Review :
Tempered Resilience is a timely and helpful companion to Tod Bolsinger's previous book, Canoeing the Mountains. Whereas Canoeing the Mountains powerfully and effectively helps leaders learn the process of leading through an adaptive challenge, Tempered Resilience explores the hard work of becoming the type of leader that can initiate change and stay the course. The use of the metaphor drawn from "blacksmithing" is effective and helpful. In a day when many leaders, including pastoral leaders, are worn down by the multiple challenges they faced in 2020 and are tempted to walk away, Tempered Resilience addresses the difficult challenge of becoming more resilient with honesty and candor, accompanied by specific practices and commitments that allow God to do the work inside the leader that will sustain her or him in the struggle. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. I was given a pre-release version of this book to read and review. I found it so useful that I purchased copies to give to our team. Tod Bolsinger combines a gift for storytelling (I love his use of the blacksmith's craft as an illustration for how resilient leaders are formed) with the academic work of authors like Edwin H. Friedman and Ronald A. Heifetz into a mix tempered by his experience helping to adapt Fuller Theological Seminary for thriving in an uncertain, unpredictable future. This book is about leading adaptive change. Problems requiring adaptive change to solve “cannot be solved with one’s existing knowledge, skills and tools, requiring people to make a shift in values, expectations, attitudes or habits of behavior.” They are “systemic problems with no clear answers.” Adaptive changes are contrasted with technical problems that can be addressed with “application of current knowledge, skills and tools to resolve a situation.”Bolsinger's counsel can help us avoid what he labels as the the failure of nerve and the failure of heart so common among those leading adaptive change efforts. If was limited to recommending one book to leaders facing adaptive change it would be this book.
